Made for 'The Avengers,' Acura's movie car concept debuted in Detroit

Does that cool, red -- matches Iron Man's suit -- convertible that Tony Stark and Bruce Banner drive off in at the end of “The Avengers” look familiar to you?

You might have seen a similar car at the Detroit auto show. The movie car is a version of Acura’s NSX concept, not due out for a few years – and David Undercoffler, the auto critic for the Los Angeles Times, recently detailed how the car came to be – and how it ended up in the blockbuster superhero movie.

Since the NSX’s debut for the movie, bloggers and car enthusiasts have had fun posting photos and speculating about the concept car.

According to Undercoffler:

The project began in June 2001, when Dave Marek, the company’s director of design, got the final pages of “The Avengers” script and was told to design a mock-up. But Acura didn’t officially unveil the NSX concept until the Detroit auto show.

The car in the film is a convertible, but the official concept is a coupe, Undercoffler reports.

The auto critic also points out that the movie car has the license plate “Stark 33” because Robert Downy Jr.’s favorite number is 33.

MotorAuthority’s Viknesh Vijayenthiran reports that in addition to the NSX, Acura also had a S.H.I.E.L.D.-enhanced MDX at this year’s New York auto show. S.H.I.E.L.D., of course, is the fictional government agency from the movie. Vijayenthiran also reports that the concept is due in showrooms in about three years.

One online discussion thread shows photos of the movie car with a mock-up window sticker, “2012 Stark Industries Super Car,” that puts city mileage at 234 and highway mileage at 302. (Yeah, it's movie magic.)

The sticker also says the car comes fully equipped with a palm-scan ID steering wheel, enviro-clone projected hologram of surroundings, self-detonating recon drone and night-vision HUD windshield. It lists the total price as $9,229,000, including tax and registration and other fees.

Yes, even superheros pay taxes.
