Acura RDX family hauler priced below rivals
That's somewhat pricier than the outgoing RDX, which started at $32,895, but the latest-generation RDX has a substantial increase in features, better fuel efficiency and more performance.
The 2013 RDX comes with a more fuel-efficient and powerful V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower (33 hp more than the outgoing 2012 model's four-cylinder motor) and should achieve an estimated 20/28/23 mpg city/highway/combined or 19/27/22 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive. The boost in fuel efficiency is aided by a new adaptive electric power-steering system that replaces the old model's hydraulic system.
There is a long list of standard features:
They include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power moonroof, backup camera, 360-watt stereo, passive keyless entry, push-button start and a noise-canceling system. If you compare it with the outgoing RDX, you actually lose some standard features, such as automatic climate control and high-intensity-discharge headlights. Also standard are 18-inch alloy wheels and a more sophisticated rear suspension damping system, comparable to the Honda CR-V (on which the RDX is based).
All-wheel drive adds $1,400.
The new model is longer and wider than the RDX it replaces, and it compares favorably with its competition. The 2012 Lexus RX 350 starts at $39,075 and doesn't include features like a backup camera. The 2013 BMW X3 starts at $37,995, but with its new fuel-efficient four-cylinder motor and standard power liftgate, it is fairly competitive in terms of pricing. The 2012 Cadillac SRX starts at $35,485 and isn't nearly as fuel efficient as the RDX, nor, arguably, is it as well-equipped. The 2012 Audi Q5 starts at $35,600 and is comparably equipped to the RDX. None of the Acura's competition is as fuel efficient as the RDX, however.

If web traffic is any indicator, Acura may be in for a good 2012.
“It was a pretty exciting show for Acura,” analyst Jessica Caldwell said. “They struggled over the past few years, but this year is more promising.”
The interest mirrored the readership of my blog giving online readers a first look at photos of the new models, which was the third-most-read story on our website for the week.
The Dodge Dart, Cadillac ATS and Acura ILX, the brand’s new entry-level luxury sedan, topped Edmunds.com’s shopper consideration measures for the week among new releases. The ILX had a 119 percent increase in consideration by visitors — a measure of the views for that vehicle compared with web traffic on other new vehicles in the same segment.
Among redesigned and refreshed vehicles, the Acura RDX sport-utility vehicle made the top four with a 16 percent increase in consideration, trailing only the Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius V and Lincoln MKZ.
“The RDX is in a great segment that is poised to do well,” Caldwell said.
Acura hopes that interest translates to sales. The brand set a sales goal of 180,000 vehicles this year, up 45 percent from the 123,299 sold in disaster-ravaged 2011.
Meanwhile, over on the enthusiast site, a video overview of the 2013 Acura NSX concept supercar, which will be built in Ohio, drew 560,000 views during that period – more than any feature on any other single vehicle.

The 2013 MDX is here! Read about its debut at the Chicago Auto Show. We're excited to see it out on the roads. Are you?
We’ve been looking at the new 2013 Acura RDX since January, when a so-called prototype debuted at the Detroit show, but Acura used the 2012 Chicago Auto Show to officially debut the finalized production model.
The new 2013 Acura RDX isn’t much larger than the outgoing model, but officials say interior space has been increased. That’s hard to verify without a tape measure in hand, but certainly the cabin is far more upscale than ever before. Acura isn’t kidding when it talks about prolific use of soft-touch materials or using leather as a trim element: both are used extensively on the instrument panel and door panels. Unlike Acura’s previous attempts at the latter (the Acura MDX and ZDX interiors come to mind), the leather door accents in the 2013 RDX have a refreshingly plush feel.
Beneath the skin, Acura swapped out the turbocharged I-4 in favor of a 273-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. Despite having two cylinders and 33 horsepower on the turbo-four, Acura says the 2013 RDX will be considerably more fuel-efficient than before. How can that be? A six-speed automatic transmission (in lieu of the previous five-speed unit) doesn’t hurt, nor does the fact the V-6 boasts cylinder deactivation, allowing it to run on three cylinders under light throttle. Additionally, the 2013 RDX’s available all wheel drive system, borrowed from the Honda CR-V, is lighter than the previous SH-AWD driveline, and sends all power to the front wheels under normal conditions.
The finished product is surprisingly impressive in person, but how will it stack up against the likes of the Lexus RX, Cadillac SRX, Audi Q5, or BMW X3? We’ll hopefully be able to tell you that after we drive the 2013 Acura RDX next month. Stay tuned.

2014 Acura NSX plans to return as a hybrid
[[posterous-content:pid___0]]Debuting today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Acura NSX Concept car is a futuristically-styled sports car powered by both a mid-mounted V6 engine with Honda ’s VTEC system and twin two-mode electric drive motors with adjustable torque control. The electric motors send power exclusively to the front wheels, where they can add or dial back torque as needed for optimal grip and performance.
Combined, the powertrains form a new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system that sends motivation to all four corners, unlike the rear-drive-only setup of the original NSX. A dual-clutch automatic transmission ensures rapid-fire shifts. Acura hasn’t specified a power output, but we’ve heard that it is in the neighborhood of 400 horsepower.
While that doesn’t sound like a lot of power for supercar-level performance, the NSX will be ultra light weight, which Honda says will provide it with a race car-inspired high power to weight ratio.
“The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way,” Honda CEO Takanobu Ito said in a statement.
Although the car will certainly use less fuel than most similarly-powered cars, its eco-friendly credentials aren’t likely to please the typical hybrid crowd. Still, Honda’s CEO says that the NSX represents the future of performance under the Acura banner, a move that should allow it to comply with emissions and economy standards while still delivering track-inspired driving dynamics.
“In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities,” said Ito.
A production NSX is about three years off. Honda says it will be built in central Ohio in a “unique, advanced manufacturing operation.”
